Before and After: The magic of a patina on a brick wall

Today we bring you the transformation of an entrance hall Bland, boring and poorly used that was radically transformed thanks to a good coat of paint with patina included and the addition of a couple of pieces of furniture that made it much more functional and attractive. Will you accompany us to see the change?

BEFORE

The space had an important exposed brick wall that the old owners had painted in a yellow tone that not only had been turned off by the passage of time, but did not highlight the texture or the wonderful qualities that a wall of this type can bring to an interior. It was time to bring out all its potential by making it more visible!

For this, the project contemplated the renovation with a coat of paint of all the walls of the space as well as the application of a patina on the brick wall seen in white and gray tones that will bring texture and movement to the wall giving it more prominence and in contrast to the rest. The process followed to realize this patina It was the following:

1. Preparation of the surface to be treated
In this case the wall was in good condition and there was no need to prepare it in any way but if we found one that would not be repaired previously and perform some tasks that would leave the surface clean, ready and prepared for the application of the base .
These tasks range from cleaning, imperfections repair, putty application, surface sanding, etc. depending on the state of the wall.

2. Application of the fund or base

In some cases and depending on the finish we want to give the patina will be necessary to use a very specific basis that we determine the manufacturer itself although in most cases is enough with one or two acrylic paint. In this case, a base of very clear white color that will bring strength and luminosity to the space.

3. Application of the patina

The patinas or glazes can be applied in an infinite number of ways and methods depending on the finish what do you want to achieve? The most common finishes are brooches, mops, sponges, patinas with gauze and there are even rollers and specific tools to achieve more special effects.

In this particular case, the contrast color (gray) was applied with a brush on the bricks in order to later spread it with a sponge. The application of the sponge hand was done with soft and repeated strokes, more or less irregular and scattered so that the effect did not look too uniform.

Both the choice of the color of the base and that of the patina is a very personal decision that will depend as much on your personal tastes as on the style you want to give to the space. The most usual and where the work will stand out is when the base color is clearer than the patina but it can also be done the other way around, although it is more recommended for environments that have good lighting, since the background color will be the dominant tone.
