Madrid, protagonist in the XVI Week of Architecture


From September 30 to October 7, Madrid will become the leading capital of the XVI Architecture Week. This event will be organized by the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) and the COAM Architecture Foundation.

Coinciding with the one hundred years of the Architecture Magazine and the ninety years of the Official College of Architects of Madrid, COAM will host the celebration of exhibitions and conferences, the opening of buildings of recognized architectural value and the incorporation of new itineraries prepared for the enjoyment of Small and older

The inauguration of this XVI Architecture Week will take place on September 30 at an event that will be held at the headquarters of COAM and that will include, among other authorities, the mayor of Madrid, José Luís Martínez-Almeida.

Rethink Madrid: Dialogues around the city

One of the novelties of this edition is the new cycle of REPENSAR MADRID dialogues that during this week will include five themes: ARCHITECTURE Magazine, Urban Planning, Crisis, Housing and Environment. This cycle will continue throughout the next year to reflect on the future of our capital and in it will participate key players in Madrid's professional and cultural life. Some of the speakers already confirmed are Alberto Ruiz Gallardón and Manuela Carmena, among others.

In addition, a large retrospective on the ARQUITECTURA magazine will welcome you at COAM headquarters. The publication of the College of Architects of Madrid, which turned one hundred years old in 2018, has presented the best Madrid, Spanish and international architecture becoming an important editorial reference throughout the different periods of its history.

The exhibition is structured in four areas: the graphic material of the last four numbers produced by the current management team; a textile labyrinth where 10 photographs of Jordi Bernadó reproduce transcendental works of modern Spanish architecture; a cylindrical room that contains images of the more than eight hundred published covers; and a plane printed as a carpet of more than 200 m2 that reproduces at a scale of 1: 500 a fragment of Madrid, representing some of the architecture and urban planning itineraries, from which buildings representing the Madrid landscape emerge in 3D printing.

Conferences, visits to buildings and itineraries for the whole family

As on previous occasions, during the 16th Architecture Week, the COAM and the COAM Architecture Foundation organize guided visits to buildings with special architectural value, conferences and different itineraries around the city whose guides are collegiate architects.

All these activities are free according to capacity, prior registration from September 18 online or in person.

On this occasion, the doors of around a hundred buildings and spaces in Madrid will open, among which some new features such as the Real Estate Hall of the Buen Retiro Palace stand out.

You can also visit regular references in this event as the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Fernando Higueras; the La Vela building by BBVA by Herzog & de Meuron; the Maravillas Gymnasium by Alejandro de la Sota; or the Bank of Spain.

On urban itineraries, proposals such as the Madrid of Antonio Palacios are contemplated; Malasaña: Baroque and Romanticism; Origins of Madrid, first walls and fences; o Centennial shops in the Chueca neighborhood, among many others.

And as in previous editions, children's activities are also scheduled to be shared with family and children, with specific itineraries through parks such as Madrid Río, El Capricho, Retiro Park or Quinta de los Molinos.

Tributes, COAM Award and the Pop Arq Store

As part of the celebration of the Architecture Week, the design market of architects 'Pop Arq Store' will open, and to culminate these seven days of celebration the COAM will deliver the badges of silver, gold and platinum to the architects who turn 25, 50 and 60 years of membership.

The College of Architects will also deliver the COAM awards and the Luis M. Mansilla award, to recognize the quality of the architectural work and the exemplary initiatives that have contributed to the dissemination of the cultural values ​​of architecture.

With this new edition of the Architecture Week, the main objective of COAM is to continue bringing the architecture and development of the city of the future to society as a whole and spread the valuable architectural heritage, which makes Madrid one of the capitals of reference of this discipline in the world.
